Music Biography
Kevin Higgins started playing bass on his 14th birthday. He took jazz ensemble lessons in Walton's New School of Music and performed in bars with his blues band, Smokestack Lightning, while still too young to buy a drink. He gained 1st Degree Honours in the Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Performance programme at Newpark Music Centre (now moved to Dublin City University). He played the underground circuit with alternative rock act Mescalito, in Ireland and the UK. He performed with jazz and blues musicians such as Phil Ware, Edel Meade, Emilie Conway, and Ben Prevo. He led two groove-jazz outfits, Vein Melter and Nature, recording an album with the latter in 2012 (released on the Acustronica netlabel).
Kevin attended the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music n 2012, and learned about the black cultural origins of the music he loved. He pursued this interest in his Masters thesis, Blues Is Subversive, for his Master of Music in Jazz Bass Guitar (Conservatorium van Amsterdam, 2015). In Amsterdam he performed and recorded with his free jazz trio, Glitchpuke. Returning to Dublin, he released an EP with Mescalito, 2016's Lure, and worked extensively with conscious pop-funk act Zaska.
Mentored by Dr. Damian Evans, Kevin presented academic papers at the ICTM Postgraduate Conference in 2018 and in Ireland's first ever jazz studies conference, Documenting Jazz, in 2019. He also co-ran a monthly Jazz Studies Reading Group endorsed by the Society for Musicology Ireland.
